Snow Day Update #3

Snow Day Update #3

March 13, 2019

Dear Mesick Families and Community Members,

I want to take this time to keep you updated regarding our snow day situation.  As of today we have taken a total of 16 weather days and it is the middle of March.  If you remember from the previous letter the State of Michigan allows for six (6) days to be forgiven for weather.  The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has granted us three (3) additional through the waiver process.  We have been granted at total of nine (9) days forgiven.  This leaves seven (7) additional days to still be rescheduled, Michigan schools are required to attend school for 180 days and have 1098 clock hours.

In working with the faculty and staff we will be scheduling school to be held on April 19, Good Friday.  The faculty and staff have been very proactive in their desire to educate our students but also alleviate the burden of so many additional days in June.   I am very thankful that we have a staff that is willing to look out for what is in the best interest of our children

Please also remember that it is very important that we have good attendance on our make-up days.  The state requires school districts to have 75% or higher in attendance in order to count the days towards our required 180 days.  This will be very important on Good Friday and the day before spring break.  Last school year, the day before spring break, we hovered at 75%.  We almost were not able to count that day.   So, please make sure your children are in attendance.

This morning a bill passed out of the Education Committee that would forgive an additional three (3) days missed due to the Governor’s declaration of State of Emergency.  There also have been additional bills introduced to allow for more days to be forgiven this school year.  The bill for the three (3) additional days seems to have the most traction.

With that being said, as of today, our last day of school would be Thursday, June 20.  Please make preparations for your child to attend school through June 20.  We will continue to keep you informed when/if potential changes are made.  Please also remember that additional closings may still occur.  The decision to close school is never easy and is always made by putting the safety of our children first.  I appreciate your support and patience as we continue to serve our children.

Blessed to be a Bulldog!
