Between Traverse City and Cadillac on M-37 & M-115 is where you will find the small village of Mesick. The village is located on the Manistee River in the beautiful woods of the Northwest Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The Mesick Consolidated School District formed in the early 1960’s and incorporates the villages of Boon, Copemish, Harrietta, Mesick, and Yuma. The district consists of three buildings:

• Floyd M. Jewett Elementary school (grades K-5),

• Mesick Jr/Sr High School (grades 6-12),

• Mesick Bus Garage.

The town was named after one of the first settlers in the area. Mesick and the surrounding communities border the Manistee River. Because of this large river and the vast hardwood forests, Mesick grew into a lumbering town in the mid 1800’s. Soon, the railway came into town bringing more people to the area. When the timber industry receded, farms began to develop. During the Great Depression, the Hodenpyle Hydro-electric Dam was constructed to the southwest of Mesick, creating a beautiful lake (the “Backwaters”) that brought vacationers and sportsmen to the area. In the 1960’s, forestry – especially Christmas Tree farms – began to become a major part of the area. Today, the small town is home to the Mesick Mushroom Festival – always on Mother’s Day Weekend – and the Mesick Jeep Blessing, which brings out more than 1,000 jeeps from around the state. The area has many lakes and vast state forest lands – perfect for those looking to hunt, fish, camp, snowmobile, and hike while on vacation!

Mesick has its own historical museum. It is owned by the Mesick Village and is run by Judy Harris, Deborah Kohn, Gregory Bailey, and William (Bill) F. Beach. These four people saw a need to preserve and display the history of our community. They are a non-profit organization and are open for visits.

Every year, Mesick hosts the Morel Mushroom Festival. This festival always takes place the
same weekend as Mothers’ Day. The festival activities officially start Friday afternoon and run through Sunday after noon. Most of the favorite activities take place on Saturday, including the parade at noon. Other major activities include the carnival, flea market, mud-bog race, rodeo, and craft show! From fair rides to more flee market venders, our little village has quite the festival!

Mesick is also the home of a Jeep Blessing. This takes place the weekend before Mushroom Festival. On this occasion, thousands of people bring their Jeeps to Mesick for this blessing. After the blessing at 11am, people can drive the different obstacle courses, look at new and old Jeeps, and check out the many area sponsors. And once again, for a little village like ours, we bring in quite the crowd!
